When the church controlled Europe during the dark ages, life was hell. Somehow, people were able to throw off the yoke of the church and create more secular governments. The Middle East is still living in the Dark Ages. As brutal as Saddam and Assad are, no one is more brutal than the church. It's because the religious think they have God on their side so unless they are reigned in, like in this country, they become more brutal than any secular government. Look at Iran and the mess Republicans made of Iraq.
