Name one thing the government has made cheaper and more effective.

Water and power where I live thanks to National Reclamation Act of 1902

When people are asked what they hate about the country, the federal government seems to always come near the top. Is our government really that bad? Could it be that government is just another scapegoat for all our own failures? A convenient whipping boy for all that we see that is wrong.

The millions of things that government does everyday that are right and good, are rarely noticed. However, if a top government official is accused of a crime, a multi-million dollar project goes over budget, or a government official uses tax payer money for vacation, it becomes a top news story. The media of course builds it into a much larger story creating the idea that this isn't an isolated incident but typical. Anyone that follows the news as most American do is bound to come to the conclusion that goverment is inefficient, run by crooks and can do nothing right since most of the news about government is negative. The millions of little things that government does right is not news and thus does not effect public opinion.

The poor approval rating of congress is due to their inability to pass legislation that fixes problems. That is not because they are shitty people. The problem is the deep division in the country is reflected by congress.

For example, if gun control legislation is passed nearly half the country will be completed pissed because they will believe it intrudes on their 2nd amendment rights. Most of the rest of the country will be pissed because of the comprises made to pass the bill and thus weakened it.

One of the reasons congress does not want to touch immigration reform is because whatever happens, the public will not be satisfied. Any law would be too restrictive for democrats and won't do enough to stop illegal immigration for republicans.

When control of government is divided which is 2/3 of the time, neither party will allow significant legislation initiated by the other party to pass. Since they can't do their job they were elected to do, pass legislation, they do other stuff such as silly investigations of just about everything which again pisses off the public because the public sees this as a waste of tax payer money.

If we want congress to be effective, we need to fix the ever widening political divide in the country. Otherwise each time a party is in full control of government, their primary goal will be nullify what the opposition has done. 2/3 of the time when control of government is split, they do nothing of consequence.

BTW rising dissatisfaction started longer than the 10 years ago. Over the last 40 years, party control over congressmen has become so strong that coalitions between republicans and democrats has all but disappeared and with it the ability of congress to do their job 2/3 of the time.

National highway system. Police departments. Libraries. Military. Water and sewage systems.
They said cheaper and more effective.

The military is more effective.

Police are possibly more effective.

None are cheaper. Most are complete cluster-flacks.

Yeah. I realize it is a lot easier to point to the government and blame it. But the reason we have liars in office is because we won't vote for anyone who won't tell us the lies we want to hear. They won't work together because we won't vote for anyone willing to work together. So long as we insist that our representatives act this way, they will continue to act this way. Blaming it on them is just another lie we tell ourselves.

As compared to what?
Since they have monopolies on the mentioned, it's all speculation.

It's possible private companies could do better with the military, but I'm satisfied with the government doing it.

I think there are services which can only be done by the government. "Cheaper" only comes into play if the provider can actually provide the product.

Agreed.

But those services should be the only services the government supplies.
