They are price gouging now, because they know when that's gone they'll have nothing left. Plus China has surpassed Us in oil imports and India is about to do that. With that much competition for dwindling oil supplies prices can only go up. Unfortunately during all this time big oil has stopped us from developing alternative energies and we are left holding the bag now.
