A Mosaic of The Donald in 1,300 Lawsuits
April 25, 2016
Of all the many hats that Donald Trump has worn, we found none more interesting than his ten gallon litigation hat: From real estate disputes to what he called “a minor civil case” related to Trump University, The Donald has been involved in a wide array of litigation.

Bloomberg Politics combed through state and federal court dockets dating back to 2000 and found Trump, and his related business entities, were involved in at least 1,300 lawsuits during that time period.

In adetail-rich interactive, they examined 203 of The Donald’s more “notable” disputes. About 45 percent of these cases were real estate-related — such as condo buyers who put down deposits on a Trump-branded project that never came to fruition. The second most frequent type of dispute involved his golf courses and resorts, followed by labor and employment, then licensing and a variety of other types of suits.

There were some meaty cases in the mix: His former casino the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City filed for bankruptcy twice. He also sued the town of Palm Beach, Florida over fines incurred related to an 80-foot high flagpole on his 17-acre Mar-A-Lago club.

Below are a few key excerpts:

• “Trump and his companies have been the defendant in almost 70 percent of the 203 cases Bloomberg analyzed.”

• “One of Trump’s signature lines in campaign speeches is that he doesn’t get sued a lot, because he rarely settles. But, in fact, he settles many lawsuits.”

• “He and his companies won in 42 cases, compared to the 19 he lost. And in those wins, he usually deflected a challenge from someone else. He was a defendant in 33 of those 42 wins.”

Alan Garten, general counsel for the Trump Organization, told Bloomberg politics, “Mr. Trump is without question an aggressive business person who is willing to stand up for what he believes in.”
