One of the many purposes of government is is to provide all of it's citizens equal opportunities to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. To provide the rules and regulations of equal opportunity. Not to provide for some and advantage others.

Hong Kong has a much freer economy than we do and it is much more Libertarian than most countries. Very little government interference and very little welfare. Almost all welfare in the country is private sponsored. That is why they have such a strong economy. Of course the Chinese are trying to screw it up.

Well, equal rights would ensure that anyone can apply for a college of their choice and nothing more. An equal opportunity would be a governmental program to assist deserving applicants financial assistance for that college degree.

The benefit for society is that college educated people pay 2.5X more in tax money on average over their working lifetimes than just high school educated people.

We also had a frontier back then, so anyone could survive on a cottage industry level.
Now that we are all stuck in urban setting that require large mortgages, purchased food instead of hunting, etc., we need more gov protection from things like evil monopolies.
