The article I read said there were two Christopher Columbus-s. One in Florence, and one in Spain, who were both seamen and whatever else made them possibilities. This article, which was carefully researched, concluded that the Christopher Columbus in Florence was the wrong guy and it was Christopher Columbus of Castille who found America.
