The reality is the scenario you are worried about simply doesn't happen. The teachers who are armed protect their class, and if the bad guy tries to come in the room they get shot. Then, the teacher stays in the class until the police tell them to come out. I actually think it can be worthwhile - IF DONE WELL - in the right community, and with community support and with absolutely strict training that is refreshed annually.
