Obama: 'Raising the Debt Ceiling...Does Not Increase Our Debt,' Though It Has 'Over 100 Times' | CNS News

Raising the debt ceiling doesn't increase the nation's debt, Pres. Obama declared in a speech today.

In a speech at the Business Roundtable headquarters in Washington, D.C., Obama dismissed concerns about raising the debt ceiling by noting that it'd been done so many times in the past:

"Now, this debt ceiling -- I just want to remind people in case you haven't been keeping up -- raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does not somehow promote profligacy. All it does is it says you got to pay the bills that you've already racked up, Congress. It's a basic function of making sure that the full faith and credit of the United States is preserved."

Obama went on to suggest that "the average person" mistakenly thinks that raising the debt ceiling means the U.S. is racking up more debt:

"It's always a tough vote because the average person thinks raising the debt ceiling must mean that we're running up our debt, so people don't like to vote on it, and, typically, there's some gamesmanship in terms of making the President's party shoulder the burden of raising the -- taking the vote."

But, isn't the fact that the U.S. has hit its debt ceiling "over a hundred times" - and, thus, has had to keep raising it - proof that raising the limit does, in fact, lead to increased debt?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

- SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, MARCH 2006

It's different now...

WOW!!!
So let me get this straight Obama.
You work for US!
We pay taxes that pays your salary.
As President you are destroying the tax paying base in this country.
You are signing 160% LESS Federal land oil leases which generates income and increases USA oil independence.
You are so bad in simple arithmetic you can't subtract from your supposedly "46 million " uninsured:
a) 10 million you consider uninsured THAT ARE NOT CITIZENS!
b) 14 million that only need register with Medicaid
c) 18 million that Can afford but don't need nor WANT to have health insurance.
d) leaving less then 4 million truly uninsured NOT 46 million!
As President your EPA has destroyed :

a) EPA itself estimated that its ozone standard would cost $90 billion a year, while other studies have projected that the rule could cost upwards of a trillion dollars and destroy 7.4 million jobs.

b)Boiler MACT Rule: EPA's Boiler MACT (Maximum Achievable Control Technology) standards are so strict that not even the best-performing sources can meet them, so many companies will have no choice but to shut their doors and ship manufacturing jobs overseas. The rule has been projected to reduce US GDP by as much as 1.2 billion dollars and will destroy nearly 800,000 jobs.

This President is destroying JOBS and TAX revenue!

The guy is totally ignorant on how the govt works.

If only ignorance was a basis for impeachment.

maybe he can get a corpseman from one of the 57 states to explain it to him

The big-government leftists (in both parties) are at it again, doing everything they can to spend us into ever deeper and deeper holes of debt. Leading the charge, as usual, are the Democrats.

Obama announced today that raising the National Debt Ceiling does not increase our debt.

That's like saying that opening the fence gate does not let the horses out. Sure, for a second or two after opening the gate, the horses are still in there. It takes them about that long to find the open gate, and then they go thundering through, every time. And then we're facing vast work and effort to re-corral them, if it's possible at all.

But now our leader wants to tell us that opening the gate and leaving it that way is a perfectly OK thing to do.

Sounds like we need a new leader, wouldn't you say? One who recommends nailing the gate shut, for starters, and then who develops a program to train the horses not to run away.

Getting rid of the more lawless horses and getting some new ones who can control themselves, wouldn't be a bad idea either.

No, but it does allow more debt to be taken on which increases the national debt.

Raising the debt ceiling is not a spending program, therefore it cannot itself add to the debt.

See? There goes another mindless gate-opener! :cuckoo:

if they aren't going to spend it why do they need to borrow it? Of course raises the debt, thats why its call "increasing the DEBT ceiling"

you cannot possibly be as ignorant as you seem

The debt ceiling is like the borrowing limit on your credit card. If VISA raises your limit, did VISA increase your debt?

Obama thinks all Americans are as stupid as the ones that voted him into office.

Not the same analogy. This is like being dead broke, 17 trillion in the hole, not finding anything between couch cushions, and ordering a new checkbook knowing that there is no money in the bank account.

The Republicans who do not want to increase the debt ceiling should come out with a plan,

in detail,

as to how they want the budget immediately modified to be able to avoid borrowing another dollar.

Show us where the cuts would be. In detail.

It's the least they could do if they want to be taken seriously.

VISA will not increase your debt limit when you're knee deep in debt.

You're more proof that liberals are stupid.

They did. It's called defunding Obamacare.

Why bother with the political kabuki show? Anything the Republicans are going to put out is going to be lambasted by the Democrats for daring to even consider thinking about contemplating cutting any social program, the Dems will only counter by offering to cut military spending, and we'll reach a deal where Congress keeps both and gets us deeper in debt.

Is the ACA costing one trillion a year in federal government spending?

President Obama made a more-than-usually ridiculous statement today, saying that raising the debt ceiling does not increase our debt.

He seems to be trying to get people (Congress, to be exact) to raise the debt ceiling by promising the debt will NOT go up if they do.

Does anyone actually believe that?

Would anyone like to place a bet, that the National Debt will NOT increase by a TRILLION dollars or more, within, say, one week of the debt ceiling being raised by an amount that would allow that?

Stunning.

What makes it even a more stark lie, is that currently the treasury is using emergency measures to pay for things. Like robbing federal worker pensions, etc...which means once a debt ceiling deal is done (and it will be done, dont go thinking this is anything more than politics) they will have to borrow the money to replenish where they are currently stealing from. In other words, it WILL raise the debt.
