"The White House is vetting federal appellate judge Jane Kelly as a potential nominee to the Supreme Court, The New York Times reported Wednesday..."

"A career public defender, Kelly was backed by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who now serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Iowa Republican praised Kelly during her 2013 confirmation hearing. He cited a glowing endorsement letter from 8th Circuit Judge David Hansen, who is close with Grassley and for whom Kelly previously clerked.

“'Every sentence of it speaks highly of your work,' he said. 'In that letter, he states that Ms. Kelly has practiced law in an exemplary fashion. … Judge Hansen concludes that she will be a welcome addition to the court, if confirmed, and I have a great deal of confidence in Judge Hansen.'”

That would be a good way to settle this issue, but Republicans are afraid they might lose, again. Kelly doesn't appear to have the corporate pedigree SCOTUS nominees usually possess, and that's what voters should base their decision on.

"After graduation, Kelly clerked for Donald J. Porter, chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.[3] She then clerked for David R. Hansen, a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.[3] During the 1993–94 academic year, Kelly taught as a visiting instructor at the University of Illinois College of Law, while also working on a LL.M. degree, which she did not complete,[citation needed] at the same institution.[4][3]

"Kelly became an assistant federal public defender in the Northern District of Iowa, in 1994 and served as the supervising attorney in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa office, from 1999 to 2013."

She sounds like a perfect nominee for a dem president who in a perfect world and normal times should have broad bipartisan support. This isn't a perfect world, these aren't normal times and we're talking about the Republican's favorite pinata, President Obama. She's definitely a non-starter.

"Since 1900, the Senate has voted on eightSupreme Court nominees during an election year. Six were confirmed. But several of those were for seats that had become vacant in the previous year.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/02/15/us/supreme-court-nominations-election-year-scalia.html
"The Senate has never taken more than 125 days to vote on a successor from the time of nomination; on average, a nominee has been confirmed, rejected or withdrawn within 25 days. When Justice Antonin Scalia died, 342 days remained in President Obama’s term."

I'd surely look very hard at anything or anyone coming out of Iowa with a great amount of suspicion.

Damn. If he nominates her, I'm good. Not quite perfect, but damn good.

I said that Obama would nominate one of the recent appellant court justices who was unanimously confirmed by the Senate. And said it was likely she would be a woman, and a woman of color.

3 out of 4. Not bad!

Oh, there's no narrative the republicans can offer that doesn't involve shrilly partisan obstructionism.

History will likely find Obama to be a fine president who helped steward America though difficult times. And history will not be kind to the current GOP.

They cemented their own legacy.

I have known some very nice Latino's in my day that had integrity. Again I would be suspicious of anything coming out of Iowa.
