Childs was born in Detroit. When she was a teen, her father who was a police officer died.[1] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 from the University of South Florida and a juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1991.[2] A mock trial program was what spurred her interest in a legal career.[3] Childs also earned a Master of Arts degree in personnel and employment relations from the University of South Carolina business school in 1991.[2][4]
From 1991 until 2000, Childs worked for the law firm Nexsen Pruet, LLC, of Columbia, South Carolina, first as a summer associate and then as an associate attorney from 1992 to 1999. She became the firm's first African American partner in 2000.[5] During her time at Nexsen Pruet, Childs gained a reputation for being an expert in employment and labor law.[5] From 2000 until 2002, Childs served as the deputy director of the division of labor with the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation during the administration of Governor Jim Hodges.[6] From 2002 until 2006, Childs served as a commissioner on the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission.[5]
In 2006, she was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to become Richland County Circuit Court Judge based in Columbia.[4] During her time as a state judge, she helmed a special business court pilot program.[5]
