Barack Obama has called for the reform of "outdated" housing market regulations to allow the construction of new homes across the U.S. and alleviate a supply shortage that has driven up prices in the past few years.

"We can't just rely on the ideas of the past, we need to chart a new way forward to meet the challenges of today. And Kamala understands this," Obama told the crowd gathered at the United Center in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.

"She knows for example that if we want to make it easier for more young people to buy a home, we need to build more units and clear away some of the outdated laws and regulations that made it harder to build homes for working people in this country," the former president added, as the crowd roared in response. "This is a priority. And she has put out a bold new plan to do just that."

Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, said she will build 3 million new homes by the end of her first term if elected president to ease the shortage and boost homeownership. Speaking in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week, the vice president said she will fight to "end America's housing shortage," including by cutting "red tape" at the local and state level, addressing existing delays and restrictions to housing production.

Comment:
The idiot Democrats caused the Great Recession with their mortgage policies.
They forced banks to make home loans to people who could not pay them back.
When the Democrats mess with the free market, they create more problems.
Do you believe that Kamala Harris could build 3 million houses?
Maybe those 30 million illegal border crossers are causing a housing shortage.

The man had eight years in office why didn't he do something then?
~~~~~~
Come on man... Obama did do something about it. Before he left the presidency he bought a house in D.C., one in Martha's Vineyard and a home in Oahu Hawaii.
That includes the home the Obama's owned before he elected president.
if she does, the government will subsidize them as low income to house the millions of aliens she's going to allow in.
When Obama was a "community organizer" he sued banks to force them to make home loans to unqualified barrowers.
Bill Clinton also messed with the housing market.
Bank deregulation caused that, not housing policy.
Sounds very Soviet of the brown turb Obammy. Lets build a lot of shitty homes, and put people in them and after a few years, when buildings collapse, all those people will die, and Climate Change can work.
How do you demand building three million new homes and boosting home ownership? Housing evaluation isn't going to go down magically, especially with the higher interest rates. Lowering the interest rate will drive demand and not make them go down -- especially if she plans to print money and introduce more government spending into the economy.
She wants to tax unrealized capital gains…nobody will be able to afford a house
Right they really want to try and up TRUMP when it comes to property development. When Obama was in office he wanted to put low income housing in high income neighborhoods. And we all know how that works it's high income neighborhood but their own.
Did he say this from the balcony of one of his $10 million dollar homes? (Blues said with extreme sarcasm)
What we have works just fine
The problem is a lot of young people are lazy, weak, stupid, entitled and soft. They don't want to work towards having a job where they can afford a home. They don't want to start small and build. They expect everything to be handed to them. They think if they graduate with a liberal arts degree they will make 120k a year.
And, our economy sucks for a wide array of reasons self inflicted by our own government.
Not quite true. It takes double the income to buy a house today than just over 3 years ago.
I don't have my analysis in front of me, but around the 1950s or 60s, the average (or median) house was approx. 2-3 times the average (or median) annual household wage. Since then it's increased every decade, and as of last year an average (or median) house is 9-11 times the average (or median) annual household wage. That's how I remember it, it's simple to look up.
