NEW DELHI: The Pakistani boat that blew itself up off the Gujarat coast on New Year's Eve was carrying "costly cargo" headed for India, intercepts picked up by intelligence agencies revealed. An 18-hour operation began after the boat was spotted at 11 am on December 31, in Indian waters.

The crew of a Pakistani fishing boat blew up and sank their vessel after trying to evade capture at the hands of the Indian navy in a high-speed chase at sea, officials said Friday.

All four people on board the vessel from near the Pakistani port city of Karachi are believed to have been killed in the dramatic episode in the Arabian Sea on New Year's Eve, according to India's defence ministry.

Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft tried to intercept the boat near the maritime border with Pakistan, around 365 kilometres (225 miles) from the coastal state of Gujarat, following an intelligence tip-off.

"However, the boat increased speed and tried to escape away from the Indian side of maritime boundary. The hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour," a defence ministry statement added.

Although the boat did eventually stop after warning shots were fired, the four-man crew then hid themselves below deck before setting the boat on fire which triggered a large explosion.

"Due to darkness, bad weather and strong winds, the boat and persons on board could not be saved or recovered. The boat burnt and sank in the same position, in early hours of January 1," said the statement.

Although the defence ministry would only say that the crew were planning "some illicit transaction", it also stated that the boat was carrying explosives.

The incident has evoked memories of the 2008 Mumbai attacks when Pakistani militants managed to sneak into India's financial capital by sea and then began a 60-hour siege of India's economic capital that left 166 people dead.

India reacted furiously last month to a Pakistani court's decision to grant bail to the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks, although he has since been detained again.

I am still scratching my head----- does anyone have any theory as to what those guys intended to DO with the
explosives???? New Years day? maybe they were
fire works-------and they intended to treat Indians-----to a new
year party ------complete with fireworks----a kind of peace making gesture (????) any ideas as to the identities of the merry makers?. They set the bomb loaded ship on fire? Could it be that they did not know the nature of their cargo?. Maybe they thought they were smuggling
afghani heroin.. If I remember correctly ----the Mumbai operation involved hand guns------not BOMBS (depending on memory) Has Pakistan commented? ------maybe it was a false flag operation-------MOSSAD DID IT. Let's ask

It has become more and more difficult for Pakistan to send operatives(terrorists) and materials needed by terrorists through cross border because India has erected fences on its border with Pakistan. So the Pakistan is looking for alternate routes through which to send terrorists (operatives) and the materials needed by terrorists. My guess is that this boat was carrying explosives that the Pakistani operatives(terrorists) meant to place at New Year celebration event to mass murder civilians. Once the boat was spotted it fled away towards Karachi. It decided to destroy itself before it was caught by Indian coast guards to avoid Pakistan from getting implicated.

"The coast guard has foiled attempts of a suspected terror boat that was actually spotted near the Indo-Pak maritime border," BJP spokesman GVL Narasimha Rao told NDTV news channel. "Possibly this was yet another attempt to sneak terrorists into the Indian territory," he added. The Indian coast guard ruled out the explosion being an accident, saying the men on the boat sped away because they were hiding "something really serious".

terrorist pakis down------it's just about the only good New Year news so far

Fret not----Pakistan will soon apologize-----just don't hold your breath. ----the fact is that such actions are UNDERSTANDABLE-------all of the Indian subcontinent is
SUPPOSED to be "MUSLIM LAND"------actually the MOGHUL
CALIPHATE--------hindus stole some of it. In fact they stole it from Muhummad even before muhummad was born----which is clear demonstration of their evil. I got my lessons in the history of India from a muslim born in New Dehli. The Moghul
Empire was the best thing----other than muhummad---that
happened to the world. According to my informant----the
Moghuls invented chappatis and dal---besides shish kebob and even capsaicin. blame the hindus

NEW DELHI: Electronic chatter shows that two Pakistani fishing boats, one of which sank after being intercepted by the Coast Guard in the Arabian sea in early hours of January 1, were in frequent touch with Pakistan army and Maritime Security Agency of Pakistan through a "contact".

Sources privy to the wireless intercepts, which led technical intelligence agency NTRO to alert the Coast Guard, claimed that the "contact" also talked to someone in Thailand on a frequent basis.

It was around 8.30am on December 31, that the Coast Guard received the first intercept about two "suspicious boats" headed towards Indian waters from Keti Bandar near Karachi. The Coast Guard then launched a Dornier reconnaissance aircraft, apart from diverting patrol vessel ICGS Rajratan towards the area.

One fishing boat was "positively identified" by the afternoon, while the other could never be traced. Then followed the "hot-pursuit" of the intercepted trawler with ICGS Rajratan firing warning shots at it, which finally ended in the boat sinking — with four people on board — around 365km from Porbander early on January 1.
