And then there's this, the Danish Meteorological Institute reports that Arctic sea ice is about two meters thick (April 2017). Guess what it was in 1940. Uh-huh, 2 meters thick.

You are of course semi correct. But you leave out the fact that the lowest recorded Arctic ice level was waaaaaay back in the 1950's. Of course it was much lower in the distant past, but you all ignore those facts. Here you go, open water at the North Pole. Hasn't happened again more than a couple of times since. This was one of those other times. 1987.

The whole issue is based on the premise that something WE are doing is causing it. Or whether anything at all is really happening. As per the European email scandal of a few years ago, we know that there had been widespread efforts to promote a story and to fudge the data to fit it. Of course, if it were admitted or determined to be part of natural solar or Earth cycles then we would just be observers with the question one of adaptation, rather than panic.

Then there is the fact that going back and looking at climate over hundreds of thousands of years, the true time scale to consider, not local scales of 150 years or so which mean little, true climate change is not indicated, indeed, it appears we are overdue to start heading into another mini ice age!

Why look back so far? Because the main influence on our climate comes from the Sun, and both the Sun has cyclic behavior as well as the Earth having three different sub-periodicities of change itself: there is a 42,000-year climatic component that has the same period as variations in the obliquity of the earth's axis (tilt); the 23,000-year portion of the variance displays the same periods (about 23,000 and 19,000 years) as the quasi-periodic precession index (wobble of the Earth); and the dominant, 100,000-year climatic cycle resulting in the cyclic variation in the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit (aphelion/perihelion).

As to man-made climate change, the argument is based on greenhouse gases, namely CO2 generated from industrial activity. Basically, there isn't much to really make a good argument for man's effect on our climate much less that we are right on the precipice of disaster if we don't act right now and unplug all our appliances and start riding bikes!!! That begs the question of why so many in the field are devout followers of the claim? My only answer is politics, and it makes for great university funding and job relevance----- kind of like the weatherman putting out a "weather alert" when there will be a few breezes that day.
