Barry Goldwater was not racist, nor did he oppose civil rights.
His 64 campaign platform included opposition to civil rights. He did this because he thought he could win the southern vote and steal the election. Regardless of his personal feelings, he was willing to oppose civil rights on the campaign trail to win votes and that's just as bad.
