He made it pretty clear when he was talking about a boat.Clearly what he was implying is that solar doesn't work at all at night and very inefficiently on cloudy days. We all know that batteries store energy, but imagine a car battery in a combustion engine that wasn't be charged by the alternator when it was running. It would be quickly drained as all electrical components would be pulling from the battery. Granted, solar panels aren't nearly as efficient as an alternator, but the point was that if solar was the source of energy used to recharge the batteries, days of cloudy weather would be very detrimental. Trump didn't clearly state his point, but it is pretty obvious what he meant.
