'Revenge porn' should be a crime

Any woman who believes a guy when he says he won't show her naked pictures or videos around is just as stupid as any guy who believes a woman when she says she's on the pill.

I totally agree. Men are untrustworthy...it's a given. Too bad they are also douche bags.

women are equally untrustworthy.

I don't doubt it. There are currently several revenge websites out there dedicated to hated ex boyfriends. And if they ever post revenge porn, I hope they get the book thrown at them.

so as long as the revenge doesn't have anything to do with nudity or sex you're OK with it ?

Bad breakup, huh?

How about a civil statute that a site must take any image down upon request?

Don't have to be a party to a bad break up to believe all the men in this thread when they say most men would do something like this.

And I agree there should be a civil statute about post content.

Not okay with it. Some assholes are going to do what they are going to do. But if they cross the line into revenge porn, cyber stalking etc. Yeah I hope they get what's coming to them.

Saying that "all men are untrustworthy" says more about you, than it does about men.

I'm just sayin....

I know I don't want this sort of thing criminalized - but I do want some restraint on the sites. How a site can refuse to remove an image astounds me. If a request is made, remove the damned image.

Yeah...it says I was agreeing with the man I quoted.

The site definitely needs to be fined.

I agree, if she comes forward and prove its her in the pic I'd just take it down.

I can totally believe the highlighted portion.

(CNN) -- "Jane" allowed her ex-boyfriend to take her naked photograph because, he assured her, it would be for his eyes only. After their breakup, the man betrayed her trust.

On the revenge porn site UGotPosted, he uploaded her naked photo and contact information. Jane received calls, e-mails, and Facebook friend requests from hundreds of strangers, many of whom wanted sex.
After the site refused to take down the post and the anonymous calls and e-mails intensified, she turned to law enforcement. According to the officers, nothing could be done because her ex had not engaged in a harassing "course of conduct," as required by criminal harassment law, and because he had not explicitly solicited others to stalk her.

Criminal law should have a role in deterring and punishing revenge porn. It's not new that certain types of privacy invasions are crimes. Many states prohibit the nonconsensual taking of sexually explicit images -- the disclosure of someone's naked images should be criminalized as well.

But in all but one state, New Jersey, turning people into objects of pornography without their permission is legal. A single post, however, can go viral and ruin someone's life.

Revenge porn and its ilk raise the risk of offline stalking and physical attack. Fear can be profound. Victims don't feel safe leaving their homes. Jane, who is a nurse, did not go to work for days. As many victims have told me, they struggle especially with anxiety, and some suffer panic attacks. Revenge porn victims withdraw from online engagement, shutting down their social media profiles and blogs to prevent strangers from finding them online. They cannot participate fully in our networked age.

People in general are untrustworthy, its not just men.

Obviously you are drawing a line when it comes to nudity and sex..... Another damn line..

No, I am not drawing a line between nudity /sex and everything else. That just happens to be the part of this story that is not illegal. Cyber stalking, slander and libel...are all things you can be sued or charged for. Those sites want to go there that is on them.

The moral of the story:

Don't pose for pictures you don't want the public to see.

Yes, her ex was an asshole. But really? "It'll be for my eyes only, honey. Honest!"

They broke up for a reason. She had no business trusting the asshole.

I guess you don't have daugthers! I would hate for this to happen to them by some dickhead.

NOTE: It would be unlawful to post nude pics on a minor (Child Porn statute), so keep in mind all this conversation is all on adults getting nude pics sent over the internet!

A guy I know I posted pics that girls sent to him they weren't nude but provocative, one of the girls got a boyfriend and asked if my friend could take the pics down and he said no the pics were sent to me thus they are mine, is this accurate?

Oh the horror...:doubt:

Here's an idea: Don't pose naked if you don't want people to see you naked.

How about a little personal responsibility? Geez!

Well, yes. How about some of that responsibility. The person that uploads that picture certainly should be held accountable for his actions. I fail to see why she should be the only one that pays particularly when he entered into a verbal agreement NOT to upload them and broke that agreement afterward. I fail to see why the free pass is given in a situation like this. Is she not allowed some freedom in what is done to her image? Again, I bring up the point if the pictures were taken against her consent. I don’t see the major difference in taking the pics against her consent and releasing them under the same circumstances.
Yeah...it says I was agreeing with the man I quoted.

At least we agree on the last part....

And this makes even less sense. Not only do you think that the individual that actually takes the action (uploading a private picture without consent) should not be held accountable for that action but now you want to make the site that hosts them accountable.

That is the most backward way of looking at this possible.

I will also contend that the ONLY way that the site can be compelled to take down the picture is if uploading it in the first place was illegal. What you had said you ‘hoped’ would happen simply will never happen as there is no recourse against the one that actually posts the image so there will be no recourse for the one that keeps it there.

We have civil courts. A breach of contract and defamation suit seem easy wins.

The issue is the refusal of the site to take the images down. And I entirely disagree that a site has the right to continue publishing images of a private individual against their will, without their consent.

The New York Times cannot post a nude picture of you against your will, neither should any other publisher. We have black letter law on publishing images. The sites will lose on this question.
