Treating Russia as an enemy that had to be militarily surrounded after a russian leader peacefully dismantled the Iron Curtain started the whole crap.

Reagan told him to tear down the wall. They did and went down from there.

I doubt if Russia will be reduced to penury as Germany was.
Well that sounds like what the US has been asking for and there have been a few people around this forum wanting the total destruction of Russia. They are no where near out yet though we must remember.

No, we treated Russia just the opposite. We welcomed them into the family of free nations. They squandered that good will by turning into a nation run by criminals and kleptocrats and invading their neighbors. They had just as much chance to be world family members as the rest of the Warsaw Pact and other old Socialist Republics.

We "treated" Russia to shock therapy in the 1990s.
Hyperinflation destroyed the savings of millions of Russians.
Life expectancy crashed.
The poverty rate exploded from single digits to 40% of the population.
A "joke" at that time claimed US capitalists killed more Russians in the 1990s than German capitalists did in the 1930s.

The Harvard Boys Do Russia

"Through the late summer and fall of 1991, as the Soviet state fell apart, Harvard Professor Jeffrey Sachs and other Western economists participated in meetings at a dacha outside Moscow where young, pro-Yeltsin reformers planned Russia’s economic and political future.

"Sachs teamed up with Yegor Gaidar, Yeltsin’s first architect of economic reform, to promote a plan of 'shock therapy' to swiftly eliminate most of the price controls and subsidies that had underpinned life for Soviet citizens for decades."

Shades of Stalingrad. :omg:
Shades of a lot of things including Robert E. Lee's embracing ye olde french tactics. It is a lot easier to pierce a line and roll up a flank when you can hit it at its weakest parts.

"Says one banker who was a frequent visitor to Russia in that era, 'The Harvard crowd hurt themselves, they hurt Harvard, and they hurt the U.S. government.'

"Mostly, they hurt Russia and its hopes of establishing a lasting framework for a stable Western-style capitalism, as Summers himself acknowledged when he testified under oath in the U.S. lawsuit in Cambridge in 2002."
