Ground squirrels seem to be everywhere along the North County coast, despite the best efforts of city and state parks officials to reduce their numbers.

I almost tripped over a few, and one tried to join me here at the picnic table,” said Kevin Braasch, a visitor from Chicago who had just sat down near Tamarack Avenue in Carlsbad after a two-mile jog from his hotel. “They sure are friendly creatures.”

A little too friendly, most people would say. The squirrel population is booming down by the beach, so much so that the animals have lost their fear of humans. They scamper right up to people, usually looking for a hand-out.

Don't feed 'em and they simply control their own populations. Simple, isn't it?

Californians would rather feed the squirrels than feed the homeless people.
Both of which can be extremely vicious.
Yes, they can. When they get to expecting to be fed, they tend to cause trouble for those that don't feed them. Same thing with wild bears. The Park Service has asked tourists to stop feeding the bears.

Uncle Ferd says the best way to catch a squirrel is...

... to climb uppa tree an' act like a nut.

Should be fairly easy to do in California.

if this was down south, it wouldn't become an issue.

SQUIRREL STEW
3 squirrels
2 cans tomatoes
2 lg. onions
Juice of 1 lemon
Dash of hot sauce
1/2 stick butter
2 to 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 c. catsup
1 can yellow corn
Salt & pepper to taste

Dress 3 young squirrels and let soak in salt water several hours. Remove and put in pot and simmer until tender. Pull meat from bones and strain liquid to avoid small bones. Add 2 cans tomatoes and 2 large onions. Cook slowly for 1 hour. Add to liquid juice of 1 lemon, dash of hot sauce, 1/2 stick butter, 2 to 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire, 1 cup catsup, salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for 30 minutes. Add 1 can yellow corn and simmer about 10 minutes, stirring to keep it from sticking. Makes about 1 gallon.
This stew may be made with chicken, rabbit, deer, beef or any other meats.

Squirrels are like doves, frog legs and crawfish...it takes a tote sack full of them to make a good meal for two.
