Military's tobacco discount: Up in smoke: Associated Press Business News - MSN Money

The Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee on Tuesday approved a $549.3 billion defense spending bill that would eliminate the 25 percent discount that members of the armed services enjoy when buying tobacco products at commissaries and elsewhere, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., chairman of the subcommittee, said studies show that tobacco use is higher in the military. He said that translates into more illnesses and health care costs of $1.6 billion a year.

"There is no reason these deadly products are subsidized," Durbin said.

The House version of the defense policy bill would thwart any Navy efforts to restrict access to tobacco. In May, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., described smoking as one of the few pleasures for a member of the military, and he easily convinced his colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee to back his measure

It was the military who got GIs addicted to tobacco during WWII

The whole reason to pay G.I.'s a low wage is because they get most everything else cheap or at a discount. And then of course their Medical Care for free.

When I quit smoking in 1988 a carton of cigarettes was $5.65 at the Commissary. If you could find the cartons that had a $2 coupon on them you only paid $3.65 a carton or 36 cents a pack!

I can't imagine payin' what people do these days.

GI or Marine in combat or on the edge of the battle area has more to worry about than the effects of smoking. Another example of Democrat pricks attempting to be a nanny state.

Being in the military made it easier to get addicted to cigarettes

In WWII they used to give cigarettes in your C Rations

Just another way for Govt to screw over the military.

Not surprised at all.

Smoke em if ya got em boy's. You've earned it. After a hard day of killing the threat forces, kick back, take a break. Have some of that shitty MRE coffee with your cig. I feel ya.

This is one of those threads that really reveals who is nuts, and who is not. Anyone who wants the government to subsidize the cost of products of the industry of death--tobacco-- to their own soldiers, is so far beyond the pale that it is useless to argue with them. Hell, the military could not control the drug trade in Vietnam within their own ranks. I never met anyone who came back from Vietnam who was not directly exposed to it, and one of my best friends came back as a Meth addict. the only difference between the two is that Meth will kill you faster than Tobacco.

This has nothing to do with their health. Durbin is in bed with big tobacco and now not only will military personal have to pay full price for cigs the government will get a bigger tax on those cigs.

This makes complete sense. Lets send them to their possible deaths but by god they will pay FULL PRICE for any stress relief!

Stupid dems

There is a horrible price to pay for that stress relief

This is the prime age to get addicted to tobacco. The military should not encourage it

If one thinks that it is a good idea for their own child to take up tobacco use, I can certainly understand why they think it is a good idea to subsidize our military's tobacco habits.

More stupidity.

Lowering the price of something is not encouraging it. Unless you think our soldiers are too stupid to make their own decisions. The government subsidizes all kinds of behavior so why single out our soldiers?

I should not have to point out that tobacco only relieves the stress that is caused by lack of tobacco. that is what nicotine addiction is all about.

Who is being stupid?

You are. Do you buy everything you see if it's discounted?

Dumbass

How old you gotta' be to smoke?

How old you gotta' be to join the Service?

"He’s hardly alone. A half-dozen senators who have been among the most vocal advocates for federal funding for smoking cessation — including Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, and Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin of Illinois — have direct or indirect investments in companies that make anti-tobacco products."

Newsalert: Dick Durbin and Harry Reid Promote Federal Funding of Smoking Cessation While Having direct or indirect investments in companies that make anti-tobacco products

So he's in bed with anti tobacco. It's still his personal interest not that of others

Give up, RW. Some people really don't care if we reward the tobacco industry for killing our veterans. Tobacco is the only product available in this country which, if used properly, will kill you.
