The one good thing Obama did was erase SOME college debts...my mother was one of those...she had been paying on that SHIT for 20 years almost and was no where near paying it off....She went back to college at 35 and raising 5 kids and last I heard was 40k still in debt....not anymore! As it should be. She became a teacher and eventually retired as one it should have been erased and it was.

So somebody else paid her debt for her; somebody she never met, somebody she'll never thank....

If you are a Republican supporter this is great news quite frankly. We know that no GOP with any sense of free market beliefs and individual achievement will vote for it, that's a given, but now how many and which Democrats will vote for it?

They are essentially splitting their party up with these socialist overtures. The old establishment Democrats, and the Bolchevik Bernie and his rabid, supporters. Will Schumer and Pelosi support free education on top of the already massive $20 trillion debt? If so, I imagine some of their donors may just find another flock to join. Maybe Bernie is making a power play early to try and take the reigns of the party going forward, or, try and dictate Democratic values. Either way, it is really unAmerican and surely unreasonable and unsustainable.

Look, we all believe in healthcare and education as important issues in a strong, vibrant and healthy society. How to achieve this is always the question. Check out Ontarios debt and you will see where such policies will lead you. On top of an already faltering economy. It's a recipe for disaster.

Only so many of those to go around. What about those RIGHT below or RIGHT above the income limits for such scholarships? My kids already know we got no money for college so get a sports scholarship,academic scholarship,go to Europe (which I prefer since this country has done NOTHING for us and never will but fuck us over.) OR go into debt and go to college here.

Just like affordable care was not affordable, free college isn't free. There is no such thing. Universities costs are outrageous. Our taxes on everything will go through the roof to pay for "free college".
And here is the result of that bill:
Every kid in high school will be signing up for the party hardy college of their choice. Then they will drop out or flunk out and we'll pay for the next year's partyflakes. It will be a constant drain on our paychecks and all that will come of it is the little bit of indoctrination the flakes got while they were there.

Punished for paying something that benefited you? How does that work exactly?

Like I said, an advanced education is an investment no different than real estate, stock market, commodities...... An investment is when you use "YOUR OWN MONEY' and make a profit for such investment.

If I should pay for college of other people, shouldn't they pay for my rental property since that's an investment? How about if taxpayers pay for my oil investment in the commodities market? What about my retirement plan? Shouldn't taxpayers pay for that since it will ease the burden I won't place on Social Security?

What the hell.......let taxpayers pay for all our investments since (supposedly) they will produce tax money in return!

Exactly. Why is college so expensive today? Because it's all supply and demand like anything else. The more demand and less supply, the higher the costs.

If taxpayers are stuck paying for more kids in college, the cost of college increases because it creates more demand. So the solution to bringing college costs down is not more demand, but less demand.

Less demand means that colleges will have to compete to attract students, and that means they will compete by decreasing their prices.

Yes, the costs are ridiculous; even to get certs for a blue collar job can run up to $30K, out of the range of costs that make it worthwhile for most to get them.

Unfortunately have to start somewhere. Germany has EXTREMELY cheap college and within 5 years of a college graduate working in Germany they have paid back in taxes what their education cost the state.

And yet no Americans are moving to Germany.

Those that can qualify for technical jobs can, and do; my son immigrated there 6 years ago, and there is an American community near where he and my daughter in law live. My granddaughter goes to an arts school in France, and my grandson goes to an AB school in Switzerland; much better than they can do here.

I just put my oldest through college and the other is half way done. They both got partial merit scholarships. They were not need based. There is WAY more need based money out there than merit based. I don't know how old your kids are but if they have the grades you need to get busy. There is a ton of need base money it out there. It's not all that easy to find, it may be worth paying for a scholarship consultant. A couple hundred bucks could turn up many thousands in scholarships.
