Of course, "Dixiecrats" refers to the short-lived breakaway party that ran Thurmond for POTUS in 1948, so since this was a minimum 16 years before the wave of party switching even began, it's an easy point to make, full of Strom and Thurmond, signifying nothing.

I believe that if you really research, in 1968, Racist Southern Democrats voted for former Democrat George Wallace, who never became a Republican.

Wallace courted and received the conservative vote -- he was one of the most influential conservatives of his times, and those racist southerners who voted for him loved him enough to be President.

You could pluck his major speeches into a Tea Party or rabid conservative rep speech and except for a few words, they would be indistinguishable.
