The Met said although crime rates were rising they remained at a much lower level than five years ago.

Scotland Yard registered annual rises across a number of serious offence categories in the past 12 months, following several years of falls.

The total number of offences during the 2016 to 2017 financial year was 774,737, an increase of 4% from the previous year when total offences stood at 740,933.

Knife crime offences that resulted in an injury also increased, by 21% to 4,415 from 2016 to 2017, compared to 3,663 offences the year before.

The force said robbery offences, which increased 12% year-on-year, were at about half the level of 2006-2007 and there were 58 fewer homicides this year compared to 10 years ago.

First pic of homeowner, 78, arrested after armed burglar 'stabbed to death in house raid'

A 78-YEAR-OLD homeowner is being quizzed on suspicion of murder after a suspected burglar was stabbed to death.

The pensioner, named locally as Richard Osborn-Brooks, was forced into his kitchen by one of two men who broke into his home armed with a screwdriver.

Police said while the other suspected thief was upstairs, a scuffle broke out between Mr Osborn-Brooks and the alleged burglar.


In the fight, the 38-year-old man suffered a stab wound to the upper body at the house in Hither Green, South East London.


He was rushed to a central London hospital but died at 3.37am...

...Met Police said they were continuing their investigations into the death, and were still quizzing the 78-year-old homeowner.


Met Police said: "The homeowner suffered bruising to his arms. His injuries are not life threatening.


"He was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and further arrested on suspicion of murder."

In 2015-16 (the twelve months beginning in March), there were 26 fatalities from gun-related crimes in England and Wales (equivalent to 130 because Great Britain 1/5 the size of the US).

Even if that has gone up 20%, It's a hell of a lot better than what we're dealing with here. I have to think the scarcity of guns with which to do the deed has something to do with it.

You're not paying attention. The crime rate is only going to continue to rise because gun bans don't work. We have hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens who come from violent countries. Latin America has 9% of the globes population but accounts for 27% of the murders. It is their culture which resorts to violence faster than other cultures that is the reason for that. Our violent crime rate amongst the general population is very low. The black, and Hispanic gangs are responsible for 80% of our gun crime.

You wish to pass legislation that will disarm those who already don't commit the overwhelming majority of the crimes, and that will then leave the most violent criminals, as the only people who are armed.
