Democrat and Republican are parties. Parties don't really matter because parties' ideology(s) can change even as the parties' names remain the same. What matters is the philosophical approach and principles an individual espouses and whether or not they hold true to those principles for sound reasons.

I doubt that most voters have any idea of what positive and negative liberty means as philosophies, but I suspect most know what their party advocates at any given time. They also know whether and to what extent their self-identity is "wrapped up" in a party appellation.

Socialists do not even attempt to sell socialism on its merits, it's word salad from the get go, which is why it supposedly sounds so good. Those who believe in freedom, don't need word salads, they just state what they believe in and know that it works. Because it's real and not wrapped in salad, it may not sound as good as socialism which is a fairy-tale. Reality can't ever beat fairy-tale.
