London (AFP) - Britain enjoyed the hottest Halloween on record on Friday, forecasters said, ending an unusually mild October with temperatures topping 23 degrees Celcius [about 74 degrees F].

Temperatures soared to 23.5 C in Gravesend in Kent, beating the previous high of 20 C, set in Dartford, Kent in 1968, the Met Office said.

Met Office forecasters earlier announced on Twitter that is was "officially the warmest Halloween on record" when the Gloucestershire town of Filton recorded temperatures of 20.5 C.

Charlwood in Surrey then broke that record, hitting 22.5 C.

Forecasters had previously said 21 C could be recorded today in the South East of England, eight degrees higher than normal for this time of year, but the temperature exceeded that by 2.5 C.

This year has so far been the warmest on record in Britain, following consistently mild temperatures well into autumn, according to forecasters MeteoGroup.
