Ten Things Amtrak Wont Tell You

Why in the heck does our Congress EARMARK the Amtrak funds for long distance routes...Amtrak's hands are tied if this is what congress has Earmarked for the money.

from your link:

Amtrak relies on federal subsidies; in 2011 it received $1.4 billion in federal funds. The company says that because the bulk of the funding is earmarked for long-distance trains, most of the subsidies go toward high-end services, like sleeper and dining cars, which most passengers never use.

Dunno how many train trips occur annually vs airplane flights, but 10 derailments in a year sounds high. Wonder what that'd translate to for plane crashes? And if planes crashed by about the same amount of trains derail, wouldn't that be something requiring immediate fixing?

If a single airline had 10 plane crashes in a year, wouldn't we ground everything until we figured out why?
