Yes Germany was basically flattened. A nuke wasn't needed. Plus, Germany surrendered.

We had very little help from Britain and zero help from the USSR in the Pacific. It was mostly the US fighting that part of the war.

I used to believe that the nuke wasn't necessary but as I got older and read more about that war, Truman had no other choice. It saved countless American lives and put an end to the war in the Pacific once and for all.
