I guess this means the US has to quit doing business with Iran and Israel, they are both mentally ill.
It has been a long time coming
According to the APA, a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.
The controversial ruling comes after a 5-year study by the APA showed devoutly religious people often suffered from anxiety, emotional distress, hallucinations, and paranoia. The study stated that those who perceived God as punitive was directly related to their poorer health, while those who viewed God as benevolent did not suffer as many mental problems. The religious views of both groups often resulted in them being disconnected from reality.
Dr. Lillian Andrews, professor of psychology, stated, “Every year thousands of people die after refusing life-saving treatment on religious grounds. Even when being told ‘you will die without this treatment’ patients reject the idea and believe that their God will still save them. Those lives could be saved simply by classifying those people as mentally unfit for decision making.”
American Psychological Association To Classify Belief in God As a Mental Illness
Who cares? The APA was pimping pedophilia as normal not all that long ago.
And homosexuality was a mental illness. Which ever way the wind blows is where the APA is at, it's mostly political.
A good percentage of psychiatrists, therapists and psychologists don't even take it that seriously anymore. It's just some literature and an excuse to prescribe drugs for big pharma. After all, one could hypothesize that this organization is indirectly responsible for all the mass shootings. It's certainly more culpable than the NRA.

Sorry, but I have to put this bluntly ...
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Psychologists, members of the org referenced in this OP, do not prescribe drugs. Further, unlike psychiatrists, psychologists are often not clinicians and don't use the "medical model".
Many are academic research oriented professionals.
.
Yeah, actually I DO know what the fuck I am talking about. Psychologists are licensed and practice. They always have multiple resources, understand insurance and referrals to psychiatrists. There isn't a licensed practicing psychologist in this nation that doesn't have a copy of the DSM and doesn't know when to refer a patient to a practicing psychiatrist. They will even know which one in the area will take your insurance.
A good one will know if your behavior, diet, sleep, social interaction, etc. needs to be changed first. Drugs, emotions, diet, sleep, etc., they all play an important mix toward greater emotional health and mental clarity.
If a clients belief in a higher power were the cause of depression, and good licensed practicing psychologist doesn't need the DSM to help the client identify the cognitive dislocations that are causing the "anxiety, emotional distress. . . etc."
Whatever.
