Isis said its forces had overrun the Aleppo Infantry Academy, a key military base north-east of the city, on Thursday evening.

The loss of the area is particularly dangerous for moderate rebels — including factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Islamist Jabhat al-Shamiya — holed up in Aleppo.
