It would be hard to measure how many times conservatives have been described as authoritarian. They want to control our lives! Impose their religious beliefs! Etc. Liberal writer Joe Conason, for example, wrote a book titled "It Can Happen Here," about the alleged authoritarian trend under President Bush.

The charge has always been highly dubious. Conservatives in the U.S. hew to the views of the Founding Fathers, who valued personal liberty above all else, and who worried most about a tyrannical central government. At the same time, it's liberals who have tended to support totalitarian regimes, praised China for its ability to "get things done," and has pushed endlessly to mandate, regulate and restrict behavior that they find unacceptable.

Now even some non-conservatives are starting to worry that the liberal left is drifting too far into authoritarianism.

In an excellent piece published in The Daily Beast, for example, Joel Kotkin lays out the particulars of "How Liberals Are The New Autocrats." Among them:

* California Gov. Jerry Brown's hailing the "coercive power of the state."

* President Obama's disdain for the democratic process when he can't get his way, and his "commonplace" efforts to rule by decree. (The latest example of which involves his executive orders on gun control.)

* Federal efforts under the Obama administration "to enforce racial and class 'balance' in neighborhoods."

* The desire to use climate change as "the killer app for expanding state control."

* The open calls on the left that "power should shift from naturally contentious elected bodies ... to credentialed 'experts.'"

Kotkin, who is a fellow at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., and executive director of the Houston based Center for Opportunity Urbanism, could have easily added to his list ObamaCare, which forces people to buy government-approved insurance or face a stiff one.

Or the left's disdain for free speech, exemplified by speech codes on campus and the Democrats attempts to impose federal restrictions on political speech. A YouGov poll last year found that 51% of Democrats say they favor criminalizing speech that could be deemed offensive.
