There Is Overwhelming Support For Increased Security Checks To Buy A Gun

"I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun." - Donald Trump, The America We Deserve

“The law already requires licensed gun dealers to run background checks, and over the last 14 years that’s kept 1.5 million of the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun,” said Mr. Obama, when he announced his gun-violence task force results on Jan. 16. “But it’s hard to enforce that law when as many as 40 percent of all gun purchases are conducted without a background check.”

The 40 percent figure that Mr. Obama and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, cite so frequently comes from a 1997 Justice Department survey. A closer look at that 40 percent number reveals it includes 29 percent of gun owners who said they got their guns from family members or friends and acquaintances.

That leaves 11 percent of firearms obtained through unfamiliar people. Of these, 3 percent reported they got their firearms “through the mail,” a process that requires a background check from a federally licensed firearms dealer. Four percent said “other,” and 4 percent made their purchase at a gun show.

The “gun-show loophole” is an exaggeration designed to foster the false impression that this is how the bad guys acquire firearms. A 2001 Justice Department survey found 0.7 percent of state and federal prison inmates bought their weapons at a gun show.

And next you'll explain how laws aren't actually about majority rule, huh?

Which is why you supported Jim Crow, right?

As we already discussed, laws aren't about majority rule. If that's what the Founders wanted we'd be a direct democracy instead of a representative republic. They were wise enough to understand that the general public, like yourself, doesn't always have a strong grasp of the issues at hand.

One of the laws which was just defeated in the Senate, and which has prompted a sit-in in the House of Representatives, was a bill to close the infamous "gun show loophole". It would have expanded the use of background checks to make it more difficult for the mentally ill and convicted felons to buy a gun.

92 percent of Americans are in favor of this.

92 percent.

One of the prime purposes of a representative republic as opposed to a straight democracy is to prevent an enraged mob from suppressing the rights of a minority based on a hysterical passion.

Polls taken after an incident like Orlando when emotions are running hot always show an increase in support for new gun laws after emotions cool down that support tends to drop. 92 percent of Americans do not favor this 92 percent of the 1001 polled do that's not representative of all Americans let's be clear about that. Can we improve our gun laws yes should we yes should we just jump in and pass legislation on what right now seems to be strictly emotion no my hope is that this November both parties will elect more people who can be reasonable on this and other issues I'm not holding out much hope for this given the choices both have made for there Presidential nominee.

Take a look at the chart in the OP. It goes back to 2011.

Public opinion isn't going to cool from 92% to less than 50%. There are just too many mass shootings for that to ever happen.

Does it matter that the country will be a lot worse off with government having the authority to decide who can or can't have a gun, than with govt having no such authority (as the Constitution demands) and we have to face an occasional insane murderer?

Does it matter to any of these people, that the proposed laws are unconstitutional?

And they say CONSERVATIVES are the ones without principles?

There is no gun show loophole. There is no overwhelming support for more gun control. There is ample evidence though that you are a shill troll.

4 different bills, 2 Republican, 2 democrat. All fail in votes along party lines but the leftist press and the mindless drones here want to cry that the Republicans want to give terrorists guns or some such nonsense. Idiots and liars.

If the Senate doesn't pass Collins bill, I hope the gop loses it.

My guess is Ryan can't bring it up for a vote without angering 40 or so goper representatives who will call for his resignation. Of course, you might wonder why any one with even the teeniest set wouldn't tell them to make my day.

Obamas "justice" department is the one who gives terrorists guns in a fast a furious way.

They are only for the Will of the People when it is convenient.

The will of the people is a ban on Muslims entering the country.

You on board?

Today most Americans (51%) now support banning Muslims entering the United States. This is slightly up from the 45% support when the question was first asked after Donald Trump proposed the ban in December 2015. This is largely a result of a big jump in support for a ban among independents (42% to 62%)
