12 Sept 2019 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Trump Wants To Ban Flavored E-Cigs. Effort to Protect Youth Excludes Tobacco Flavors
'....The announcement Wednesday comes as doctors and health officials around the country are investigating more than 450 possible cases of severe lung injury linked to vaping. Possible cases have been reported in 33 states, and at least six people have died nationwide. "We can't allow people to get sick and we can't have our youth be so affected," Trump told reporters Wednesday at the White House. "People are dying."

Trump described vaping as a new and fast-growing problem. He said he wanted to ban all flavored vaping products -- other than those with tobacco-flavor. "They've become very rich companies very fast," Trump said. "Vaping has become a very big business."....It's unclear whether vaping companies could take legal action to block a ban. An advocate for the vaping industry quickly said his group was "deeply disappointed" by the president's decision.

The move came two days after melania Trump voiced concern over the growing dangers linked to e-cigarettes. "I am deeply concerned about the growing epidemic of e-cigarette use in our children. We need to do all we can to protect the public from tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth," she tweeted Monday.
....
For example, officials with the state Department of Health Services have said that 24 of the 27 individuals with confirmed lung injuries in Wisconsin reported vaping oil with THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. But officials have said that they are continuing to investigate "all possible causes" of the lung injuries. An investigation by the Journal Sentinel in 2015 found doctors in West Virginia and Vermont had documented two cases of severe lung injuries they suspected were tied to vaping cinnamon and other flavors of e-liquids. The newspaper's investigation also revealed that the e-liquids sometimes contain flavoring chemicals known for causing irreversible lung damage. The chemical diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione, were found in products, in some cases, even when companies advertised their products were diacetyl-free.

Vaping advocates say...."Destroying thousands of small businesses and sending ex-smokers back to smoking will do nothing to stop drug dealers from selling contaminated THC cartridges. A flavor ban will only lead to the creation of yet another multibillion-dollar black market that will operate with zero safety controls," Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, said in a statement. He also predicted the ban would also be a failure

"Clearing the market of non-tobacco-flavored products is important to reverse this alarming epidemic," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a statement.'

*Police are crediting the parents of a Wisconsin high school student for coming forward with information that led to a massive drug bust involving an operation that manufactured thousands of counterfeit vaping cartridges loaded with THC oil every day. Officials said the investigation started after the parents caught their son in possession of vaping cartridges with THC. They brought him to the Waukesha Police Department in early July in an effort to hold him accountable, officials said.

The probe reportedly led back to two Kenosha County brothers -- Tyler and Jacob Huffhines -- and a major drug operation running out of a condominium in an upscale neighborhood that officials said was rented under a fake name....Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said the operation allegedly run by the Huffhines brothers may be one of the largest of its kind in the nation to date.'
