Tom Brady the G.O.A.T

The greatest athlete ever.
Even some of the greatests of all time don't compare to him.
A legend above all of them.

Tom Brady solidifies himself as one of the best athletes in history

He is the GOAT in football, definitely not the greatest athlete of all time. What other professional sport would he excel in?

I have no dog in this race, but who would you consider the greatest athlete of all time? Obviously, one who dominated in more than one professional sport, right?
I’d take an Olympic decathlon champion over any of them.
Nope; they are very good at MANY sports but NOT THE BEST IN any sport!!! That makes them a very good all rounder....still fabulous of course but the BEST is one who redefines their sport. Hence I say Don Bradman. Sorta a Babe Ruth ++ . I have ZERO idea about Brady but as he likes Trump over half the US already would say no without a second thought...or a first for that matter. Oh; and this is not a sports question; it's an EXCELLENCE question.

Greg
The question was about the best athlete, not the best in one sport. A decathlete has to demonstrate athletic superiority in all aspects of athleticism.

Yogi Berra won 10 championships. Is he the G.O.A.T.?
Yogi Berra played for the New York Yankees in a sport with no salary cap. Year in and year out the Yankees were loaded with stars because they had more money than anyone else to go out and get them. What Tom Brady has done in the NFL of today is amazing because the league is set up to create parity! You have the salary cap. You have a draft where the best teams pick last. You have a schedule where the best teams have harder schedules. You have free agency. Brady won Super Bowls with offensive rosters that were not filled with super stars yet he made players like Julian Edelman look like one!
You need to credit his Brady’s GM’s for that.
Granted Brady was blessed to be in an organization that was well run but the fact is...his ability to adapt to different personnel gave the Patriots the ability to transition from one style of offense to one that functioned completely differently. Brady's ability to make others look good enabled the Patriots to take "cast offs" from other teams and have them become valuable contributors.
Every offense was the same. Handoff and seven-on-seven.

You obviously know nothing about football if you think every Patriots offense was the same.
They were all the same. Zone blocking, screens, draws, dives and lots of unhindered passing. I’m a football purist and long time coach. You don’t want to go there.

No: a decathlete does NOT demonstrate superiority in any ONE sport. Very good all-rounders but not top shelf in any.....one Pommy bloke was I think a world record holder in an event...

""the greatest all-round athlete this country [United Kingdom] has ever produced."[4]"

All rounders are NOT the same level as specialists.

I am WRONG...he broke the Decathlon world record a couple of times.

They were NOT all the same! They changed as personnel changed. When they featured Randy Moss they took the top off the defense by throwing deep. At other times they featured large bruising backs like Cory Dillon and they would pound the ball. Then there were offenses that featured smaller backs that were great out of the backfield catching the ball like a Kevin Faulk and they would match those up against linebackers. When they had Gronk and Hernandez paired together they used the tight ends as more of a passing threat than a running one. When Hernandez was gone they went away from two tight end sets and featured slot receivers like Julian Edelman. The strength of the New England Patriots for all those years was that they could go in at half time and totally change their offensive game plan if something wasn't working and the reason they were able to do that was that they had a quarterback named Tom Brady who would adapt his game to what the coaching staff asked for.

Tom Brady solidifies himself as one of the best athletes in history

The GOAT in football. After this past Super Bowl he is one of the greatest athletes in all sports.
He’s good at seven-on-seven.

That argument doesn't fly. He plays by the rules of his time period. If it's so easy now as you imply then why is he the only QB since Troy Aikman in the early 90's that has won more than 2 Super Bowls? Brady not only won more than 2, he won 7. Even 1st ballot Hall Of Famers Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees only won 1 Super Bowl so far. Peyton Manning won 2. Tom Brady has far outplayed all his peers in his time period. The rule changes are irrelevant. Brady was the football GOAT before the Super Bowl, but moving to a losing organization that hasn't made the playoff since 2007 and winning a Super Bowl by crushing KC put him in the conversation outside of football as one of the greatest athletes along with MJ, Phelps, Ali, Ruth, Gretzky, etc just as the OP's article states.
Talk to his OL coaches. Ask his defensive coordinators. That game I saw last Sunday was won by the TB secondary. Ask his GM’s.

And Jordan doesn't win without Pippen, Rodman, etc. With the exception of Phelps and Ali, these guys all play team sports. But often in team sports it's that one great athlete that puts the team over the top.

Jordan, Phelps, Ali, Ruth, Gretzky and now Brady.

They all passed the ball frequently and ran lots of zone blocking schemes and played to attempted personnel mismatches. Same thing.

You're a "coach" and you can't tell the difference between an offense that features Randy Moss going deep and one that features the run game? The mismatches you speak of is what was different. The reason that the Patriots were able to capitalize on those mismatches was Tom Brady's ability to adapt.

Football requires the best GM’s. One player can’t have the same impact as in basketball. Ask Archie Manning and conversely Larry Bird and Indiana St. An NFL QB can have too much influence thanks to the rules but if he doesn’t get the necessary protection, forget it.
No one ever touched Brady.

My reply to that contention is that Brady won even when his offensive line wasn't good. He got the ball out fast so that his linemen didn't get exposed.

I didn’t remove any credit from Brady. I just think his status in the history of the sport and in athletics in general is inflated due to the nature of the post-1978 rules in the NFL.

The question was about the best athlete, not the best in one sport. A decathlete has to demonstrate athletic superiority in all aspects of athleticism.

Reread my post. This was about athleticism, not one sport.
Reread my post?? You do realise to get to the top 1000 of any sport require a very very good athlete...no doubt about it, but to be the TOP, Numero uno.....that takes another level!!! I have no prob with all rounders...fine. But Excellence BEYOND COMPARE?? That is a different beast!

Greg

But when your success relies entirely on the performance of several others then it’s inflated.

No, you can’t win without LOS superiority.
Yet Brady DID win without line of scrimmage superiority? That contention of yours simply proves how great Brady has been!
Nobody touched him. That clearly demonstrates LOS superiority.
Sigh...I was referring to the times when New England's offensive line was NOT good! If you give Tom Brady time to look over a defense you might as well call the game under a mercy rule because he's going to tear you a new one!
