Trump didn't cancel the talks because of any terror attacks -- he cancelled because his advisors convinced him that he could look bad if this deal failed like his previous talks with North Korea that all ended in absolute failure.

Also, it was Trump who still has a Tweet floating around attacking Obama for ever thinking about sitting down and having talks with the Taliban

To lay aside sarcasm for a moment, we invaded Afghan because the Taliban let bin Laden stage 9-11 from there. There was no other afghan govt. The negotiations were about not ever doing that again, and to a lesser degree, not abusing women. (ok Trump sarcasm level high, but resistance prevails)

Bolton just wants to cut and run and declare victory without any agreement. Possibly we should have done that years ago under Obama because supposedly the Taliban realize we once annihilated every one of their leaders, and we're quite capable of doing it again. But a lot of Americans were terribly wounded and died, and it would be nice to think that their sacrafices at least stopped school girls from being shot in the face or having acid thrown in their eyes.

There are only two ways to end it. One is to withdraw and let the civil war work it's own way out. The other way is to win. And to win, we go in and win with a large force and treat them like they are ISIS, which they really are. You wipe them out with an overpowering force and chase them until they are gone. Except that the Taliban never knew anything about the 9/11 attack staging, they hated bin Laden, they offered to extradite him to Saudi Arabia or any Islamic court in the world, and they were our allies against the Soviets back in 1988.
So there was really no reason to ever have attacked the Taliban, and they are the best possible government we could expect out of Afghanistan.

The Taliban had absolutely NOTHING at all to do with the WTC attack on 9/11.
There is absolutely NO ONE who has ever even remotely said they had anything at all to do with it.
Even most of al Qaeda was totally unaware that bin Laden was behind it until much later.

And using drone to assassinate people is ILLEGAL!
Drones are no way near to being able to accurately identify targets, and historically have a false kill ratio of about 10 innocent people for every 1 we get right.

The Arabs all left Afghanistan and are likely in Iraq, Syria, Libya, or someplace else now.

The Taliban refused to hand over bin laden to the US even before 9-11. Their succor dates back to the Kenya and Tanzania attacks on Americans. After 9-11 they again refused to hand over bin laden to the US. They only offered to hand him over to someone else. I'm not discussing this bullshit appeasement history redeaux again. I gave W the benefit of the doubt in thinking a democracy in Iraq was "easily achievable" and wouldn't require the blood and treasure. But I never gave him the benefit of not killing bin laden and all who gave him safe haven. I give Obama the credit for being willing to give the green light even knowing that if the Seals failed, he'd be a one term potus.
