Wrong. The interstate highway system is a huge socialist boondoggle that decreased the wealth of this nation.

You speak like someone who has never travelled farther than the one mile gravel road between Hacksville and Hootertown.

The Interstate Highway system allows people to travel from Seattle to Miami, from Boston to San Diego, from Sab Francisco to Buffalo, from Denver to Memphis without the encumbrance of a single traffic light or stop sign.

If you think that this did not encourage and enable regular people to buy cars, establish the predominance of American automobile industry, then one must come to the conclusion that you are either blind, don't drive or are ignorant.

I traveled all the contiguous 48 states as I described above. I found that pretty much all the interstate roads, east to west, north to south, were smooth as table top, all the bridges looked OK whether I traveled over on under them, and all the tolls I had to pay were reasonable and fair.

There may be shortcomings in the overall administration of the Interstate Highway system, but it is still one of the things that America can most justifiable proud of, because there is nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Yes, thank to President Eisenhower.

The idea of driving from Miami to Seattle is utterly ludicrous. True, it would never have been conceivable without a boondoggle like the interstate highway system. Instead what would have happened is that for interstate travel people would drive their cars onto railway cars especially designed for the purpose and then allowed the railroad to transport them to whatever city they wanted to go to.

Spending a lot of additional capital and cars and trucks that wouldn't be useful if it wasn't for the interstate highway system is not an efficient use of capital. It's a complete waste of money.

There's also nothing like the Taj Majal anywhere in the world. But when you consider all the people who could have been housed and fed with the money used to create this colossal waste of money, you understand that it's an offense against human decency and ethical government.

I can drive straight through from Fredericksburg VA to Dallas Texas in one trip, though I usually break it into two with an overnight in Nashville. If my back would let me, I would do a lot more traveling like this in my copious time.

Not to diminish the importance of the presidency but-----but congress holds the purse strings. That said, FDR set the policy and 40 years of continuous congressional control by the Democratic party put in motion the greatest economic boom and expansion of military power in American history.

The obvious answer is Truman before the USSR developed an atomic bomb. We were the only economy not destroyed by the war and the most powerful military

Yep! - that and-----and the greatest generation achieved the American Dream by taking advantage of the The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944—commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights...

"Before the war, college and home ownership were, for the most part, unreachable dreams for the average American. Thanks to the GI Bill, millions who would have flooded the job market instead opted for education. In the peak year of 1947, Veterans accounted for 49 percent of college admissions. By the time the original GI Bill ended on July 25, 1956, 7.8 million of 16 million World War II Veterans had participated in an education or training program.

Millions also took advantage of the GI Bill’s home loan guaranty. From 1944 to 1952, VA backed nearly 2.4 million home loans for World War II Veterans."

...creating the biggest, richest middle class in world history, not to be overtaken until over thirty years of upward redistribution of wealth allowing other countries to catch and even surpass the United States' previously unchallenged exceptionalism.

The height of our power is the point where the decline began, so it's not anything to boast about.

Too bad you did not include Dwight Eisenhower in your survey.

His greatest legacy, the Interstate Highway system put America on wheels and was the greatest reason for the wealthiest middle class in human history.

Wrong. The interstate highway system is a huge socialist boondoggle that decreased the wealth of this nation.

Yea thats it !!!

In reality it opened up ways to speedily move goods around the county and grew private Industry, connected cities to country, and the trucking industry was the boon to growth

can you imagine anyone, in any other country, saying they shouldn't have a highway system>

it takes a special kind of stupid to want something like that.

our radical right is embarrassing.

Not according to the trucking industry...we all know that pure capitalist want dirt trails to deliver their manufactured goods...:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

There's no doubt that the interstate highway system increased the wealth of the trucking industry, but that doesn't prove that it increased the wealth of America. Before the interstate highways were built, we had a perfectly serviceable transportation system called the railroad system. Not only did it transport goods more cheaply than trucks, but it didn't cost the taxpayers a dime. So how did the taxpayers receive a net benefit from the $500 billion they spent in interstate highways? We are $500 billion poorer because of the interstate highways, not richer.

So industry was constrained as to where the RR tracks were.

So with your mentality the hover dam should not have been built or any other projects in infrastructure that helped the county and people.

I always knew you were a fucking retard but this takes the cake. The opening of the highway system spawned all kinds of industry and new jobs.

No, I am autistic, a very different thing, genius.

Yes you have told me you have Asbergers which is a form of Autism. We're not discussing your social interaction issues. We are talking about your bizarre refusal to accept reality. I was clear in what I meant. I even reiterated it. Yet you still are running that libelous sig. So I ask again. Are you Bipolar or just trolling?

Yep, Americans were paying for all kinds of stuff they wouldn't have needed if it wasn't for the interstate highway system. It was all money pissed down the drain. We had a perfectly serviceable railroad system. The interstate highway system put it out of business as far as passenger traffic is concerned, and the railroads didn't cost the taxpayers a dime.

You think the interstate highway system was beneficial because you're a brainwashed dupe who doesn't understand what we gave up when we paid for this boondoggle.

If private industry wanted to build it, then fine. Government should not be building infrastructure. Whenever it does so, the motive is always political. It seldom has anything to do with any economic benefit.

Duh . . . wrongo! we already had a means of moving goods speedily around the country. It was called the railroad system. The interstate highways did not grow any private industries other than the ones that were primarily associated with interstate highways. How was the trucking any more of a "boon to growth" than the railroads had been before the former was built?

It boggles the mind what our highway system would look like if it were left up to the free market

For one thing, we would have no highways in Red States

When you say "the railroads didn't cost the taxpayers a dime." you mean-----you mean... what do you mean?

Without the assistance of the U.S. government, railroad construction between 1860 and 1900 would have been greatly curtailed. Building a railroad was an expensive venture. Private banks, fearing the railroad companies would need a long time to pay off their debts, were reluctant to loan money to the companies. To remedy the situation, Congress provided assistance to the railroad companies in the form of land grants. The land grant railroads, receiving millions of acres of public land, sold the land to make money, built their railroads, and contributed to a more rapid settlement of the West. In the end, four out of the five transcontinental railroads were built with help from the federal government.

Your opinion does not equal facts. Truckers move goods to and from areas the railroad does not reach. A truck cant derail and block other shipments from moving. The interstate was also a boom to tourism. You must be a simpleton if you are speaking about the railroad system without a clue. The railroad system in the US is privately owned by a few companies. This was granted to them by the US government to which you pay taxes dumbass. Our passenger railroad system is supported by taxes as well but operate at a loss because they are unable to take control of the privately owned tracks and priorities passenger traffic. The railroads still move a ton of goods but no one wants a train coming their subdivision in the middle of the night.
