Perhaps like an intelligent, dignified adult. How should President Trump have responded to McCain's attacks against the people instead?
That would mean either (a) simply rising above the issue, or (b) addressing it in a manner that did not insult war veterans, war heroes, the captured, the maimed, the killed, and their families.
If he lacked that capacity -- and it clearly appears that he does -- then I'd think he'd be self-aware enough to just stop talking. Evidently that's beyond him, as well.
I realize his fans will defend his behaviors to any depth, so I'm not trying to convince you of anything. You asked.
.
What you are suggesting is that Donald Trump be a babyface, and honor a code of conduct that his adversaries don't.
That never worked out well for McCain or Romney against Obama, it didn't work out well for a lot of Republicans. Trump didn't see that strategy of just taking it anything more than a trip to Palookaville, aka being a pathetic loser.
Actually, during the 2016 campaign, Trump told El Rushbo that his advisors told him just to take it as you are suggesting there. Trump explained it just wasn't in his blood to do otherwise.
No one knows if Trump would have still won by not responding to his opponents' slings and arrows in 2016. However, with brutal attacks like the Access Hollywood October Surprise, I don't see how Trump could have survived without attacking back.
