It looks like a silencer or a flash suppresser on the revolver. You can't do that with a stock .45. The revolver pictured is a S&W Victory or a Model 10, in .38 Special. Those were used throughout WW2, Korea, and the Vietnam War. They were also often carried by MPs or pilots during the Vietnam War...
