Walmart's weaker outlook shows new stress in poor and middle class - The Denver Post

Walmart offered a weaker forecast for the coming months. The problem? The poor and middle-class Americans that Wal-Mart caters to — and who are big drivers of spending in the U.S. — are struggling with rising gas prices, delayed income-tax refunds and higher payroll taxes.

As the fortunes of many Americans go, so goes Wal-Mart, so goes the economy.Wal-Mart is the latest in a string of big-name companies from Burger King to Zale to say that Americans are being squeezed by these new challenges."Walmart moms are the barometer of the U.S. household," said Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at NBG Productions, who follows Wal-Mart Stores Inc. "Right now, they're afraid of higher taxes and inflation."

What happened Obama, you said everything was going to be OK,your so confident you even took in a round of golf with tiger, and now another 4 years of broken promises,Hell Obama you have spent trillions and we are still in the shittier, what next king Obama ? Oh, Thats right forced healthcare gets going next year ,boy can't wait to see what the economy will look like when that kicks in.......:cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

The increase in social security tax hit everyone, even the low wage workers. And prices are all going up. People are feeling the pinch and just aren't able to go out and spend as much. And we know who to thank.

What a mess this Country is in, just spend and borrow, will this Country ever get is act together ?

Walmart's weaker outlook shows new stress in poor and middle class

Yup.

That's exactly what it shows...a loss of purchaing power or a loss of confidence (both probably)

Just as sales numbers at places like Berdorfs or Tiffany's shows us that the wealthiest segment of the population is feeling wealthier and more confident.

Pointing this out could be construed by the terminally stupid as a kind of class warfare.

What are the majority leadership in our country doing to pursue policies that will lower gas prices in the short term? Further, I am surprised that the majority leadership would let Social Security taxes go back up when the country hurting so much economically.

I have a feeling the working people at those establishments are feeling just fine that tiffany's and Berdorfs are doing well when it comes to sales.

Its that pesky trickle down economics that progressives pooh-pooh all the time.

Pointing out the simple fact that rich people are not hurt by rising gas prices and rising food prices is not class warfare, it is just gross ignorance of the topic, and a strong indication that you are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

obama will come out with a government study that will prove that the economy is strong and getting stronger. Liberals will believe it. They will say that the poor and middle class are hoarding money and aren't taxed enough. There are poor people who need the money that the poor and middle class are spending on all that stuff for themselves.

Walmart makes a profit off every dollar spent at their stores. Taxing people so much that they can't spend money and buy stuff at those stores deprives Walmart of their profit so it's a good thing.

Easy. PRIVATE SECTOR companies (you know, the heroes of America) have jacked up prices for oil, power, food, rent. Somehow, power companies and oil companies are making record profits. So while Wal-Mart may have taken a hit, others are flourishing.

Wal Marts weaker outlook could not have anything to do with the marketing changes they have implemented in the last few years could it?

Naah has to be the people could not be the management.

Yeah, inflation will do that... and you ain't seen nothing yet.. just wait for when the bill comes do for the trillions we have been printing over the last years.

Yes, it must be those evil corporations that are doing these dastardly deeds. It couldn't possibly be the Fed pumping out money as fast as the printing presses will allow. It couldn't be dumbass policy decisions that mandate and subsidize the conversion of our food supplies into higher priced gas. It couldn't be the result of excessive regulation driving up the cost for all businesses. No, it must be those evil corporations conspiring to keep the people down.

In my occupation I work with small grocery and convenience stores. Both independent operators and chains. In the past several months the increase of "pocket change" purchases has increased 10 fold. People complaining about smaller paychecks (thanks Obama) and more expensive gas/ grocery/ cigs....thanks democrat tax and spenders.

The pigs at the public trough are killing the small business operators; the middle class and working poor...fucking killing them.

"Majority leadership"? That would be the DEMOCRATS.

Democrat President. Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate. Republican-controlled U.S. House. From 2009-2011, the Democrats controlled the Presidency, the Senate, and the House.

Majority.........DEMOCRATS.

Social Security payroll taxes didn't "increase".

The MORATORIUM on Social Security payroll taxes ended.

People are now paying the same Social Security payroll taxes that they paid BEFORE the moratorium.

So is this an example of post-frontal lobotomy economic theory? :cuckoo:

So Tiffany's "sales numbers" are doing just fine? WRONG.

New York--Same-store sales in the Americas slid 5 percent in the second quarter and are down 3 percent in the first half of the year for Tiffany & Co., the New York-based retailer reported Monday.

In the second quarter ended July 31, total sales in the Americas were $434 million, a 1 percent decline as compared to the second quarter of last year. Sales fell 9 percent in Tiffany’s New York flagship store and were down 4 percent in comparable branch stores. Combined Internet and catalog sales rose 3 percent.

For the first half of the year, total sales in the Americas are up 1 percent to $820 million, with sales down 7 percent at the flagship store and 2 percent in comparable branch stores. Combined Internet and catalog sales have increased 2 percent.

Globally, Tiffany’s same-store sales declined 1 percent, with total sales increasing 2 percent to $886.6 million. Gross profit declined from $514.7 million to $499.2 million. Gross margin slipped from 59 percent to 56 percent.

Thank the fools who keep minimum wage low!

yeah....that's the ticket.....and when BO's insane policies create hyperinflation and the dollar goes bust and food and gas become impossible to buy even at Walmart....we'll just raise min wages again and that will solve everything.....
