The FBI says more people are killed by knife every year than by gun. At any given time in history, every firearm, sword, and/or knife was a weapon of warfare.

Flintlocks in the 1700's.

Single shots in the 1800's.

Lever action repeaters in the later 1800's.

Bolt action rifles in the early 1900's.

The semi auto's were invented for WW2 in the 1940's. My favorite is the M-1 Carbine. This is the prototype for Ruger's Mini 14 and also for the M-14 battle rifle before it.

The 2nd Amendment does not draw a line anywhere. It presumes that civilians WILL be armed with weapons of warfare. However the Fed's and the state legislatures departed from this notion radically in the case of submachine guns in the 1930's. That is when the slippery slope began.
