What did our founders really mean when they said “general welfare”?

No it means general

Helping individuals does help the general population

"General Welfare" means the well being of the country as a whole.

So for instance, if we have a Great Depression, "everyone" is in the dust bowl, there's very few people who aren't.

General Welfare means keeping the conditions such that people can succeed, if they either want to work for a wage, or go into business for themselves.

IMO.
scruffy why do you suppose rightwinger and Vegasgiants want to believe that “general” points to a lowlife degenerate in a blue shithole with four baby daddys?

Where did I say that?

If you read what I posted, General Welfare applies to farmers, fishermen, old people, families with children, poor people, rich people

Government helps them all

If you voted for Trump there’s a good chance you’re a lot like me with regard to why....I voted for him on two policies almost exclusively...First and foremost on how he would deal with illegal Mexicans and the border and second on how he would yank lowlifes off the Democrat induced welfare plantation.
Anyhoo, as we approach the point where welfare reform will be visited I ask for your opinions on EXACTLY what you think our founders meant when they used the phrase “GENERAL WELFARE” in the constitution?

Attention all Smartest Guys In The Room, and legal scholars:
Please spare us the case citations such as the U.S. vs Butler case and the like. I’m interested in YOUR opinions.
It meant policies that would promote the general well-being of the population-at-large. Hard to do in a competitive society.

No opinions (guesses) are needed. In the context of the framers of the Constitution, the meaning of the language is clear. General means the broad or whole of the people, everyone. And Welfare pertains to the well-being or health. So general welfare pertains to the broad overall health of the people, meaning to no one specific group or class, not to exclude anyone, and by health, they mean the prosperity and security and betterment of society, not medical health.

In that case, can anyone say that Joe Biden has defended the general welfare of the American people? Nope. Only people doing well these days are Pfizer and Blackrock. Impeach the fucker.

Well scotus disagrees with that opinion and has for generations so theres that

But you're entitled to a opinion too. Lol

“General” refers to ALL or the whole….not groups or individuals.
No legislation helps EVERY person the same
Some are not helped at all

General means the nation in general is helped by the legislation

General Welfare means do what is best for the country

"Medical health" isn't health, it's merely the absence of illness ("We ain't sick, we just don't feel good"). The general welfare must include true physical and mental health. This is promoted by rational government policies.

Protecting the southern border would be a rational policy that would reduce the angst and thus promote the mental health of the people.

How does incentivizing ShaQuita to make more babies for more welfare help the country as a whole?
How does incentivizing illegals to traverse our border help the country as a whole?
Are you saying Democrats have perverted the shit out of the “general welfare” clause?

It makes America great again

General welfare meant the welfare of the states not individual citizens and certainly not foreigners.
No. It couldn't have meant that. For the states are in themselves separate entities co-empowered with the Fed. The states to oversee their individual territories, and for the Fed to oversee that which affects all, collectively, both the states and the people within them which make up the states.

So, something cannot be good for a state if it is bad for its people therein, and vise versa, as such, the general welfare had to apply not to any one individual but to all who reside legally within the USA, which yes, excludes illegal foreigners.
