What gives us the right?

What I dislike about this is making the olympics political. Yes it's been political before, but the entire purpose of the olympics is that the nations of the world transcend politics and compete in friendly competition. Every time we play political games, we are not living the ideal.

What gives us the right to force homosexuality on Russia? Who do we think we are that we can tell another large country that they must accept homosexuality as normal?

If the Russian people want to treat homosexuality as a perversion, what gives us the right to send a delegation of gays over to tell them they are wrong?

We cannot tell muslims that they are wrong, we cannot say Christian prayers at high school ball games, we cannot put a manger scene in front of a public building, we say nothing about the persecution of Christians in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

But we get all spun up about gaydom and think we can force Russia to change their polciies on gays.

WTF is going on? We have become a nation of hypocrites.

yet we turn a blind eye on Iran when they publically hang persons accused

of being gay

in fact we just gave them a 1/2 billion dollars

The fact that you and most others on the right envy the authoritarian state that is Russia today, and its ability to violate the human rights of gay individuals, is both telling and unsurprising.

It’s also very telling that during the Soviet Era you and other conservatives believed you had to right to dictate to Russia that they ‘tear down walls’ and afford human rights to the Russian people, including Soviet Jews.

So the actual question is: what is it about gay Russians that they not sustain the same human rights you and other conservatives demanded for the Soviet people.

True, and if the Olympics was in a muslim country, we would not be doing this.

Its no different than Christian missionaries going to saudi arabia and telling the people that Islam is wrong and they must accept Christianity.

Why can't the USA leave the rest of the world alone to live and believe as they wish?

So you're saying we shouldn't use our influence to promote human rights across the globe?

except in Muslim countries, right? we can't offend our muslim brothers now can we?

But, many cultures do not consider homosexuality a "human right", they consider is a perversion.

Who are we to tell them they are wrong and we are right? What makes us so high and mighty that we can tell the rest of the world how to live?

We should use our influence to try to change any country that treats it's citizens as second class citizens. Obviously our influence is limited in many parts of the world, but it's our responsibility, as the worlds only superpower, to promote our model for freedom and human rights.

nice spin attempt, but off topic.

I don't envy the Russian style of government. The question is what gives us the right to tell them they are wrong and we are right.

the Berlin wall episode with political not moral.

We need to get over the idea that we are the world's police force and morals enforcer. It is costing us billions and making enemies everywhere.

Why is that our responsibility? Where is it written that we are to be the world's moral compass?

Why not fix whats wrong with this country first and let the rest of the world deal with their own problems?

Of course America has the moral authority to tell other countries what's right and wrong. This is the most free and human country on the planet.

No, he's asking what gives us the right to. We who ignore the persecution of certain groups and whine about the persecution of others.

Well if you want to take on the views of an isolationist fine. I believe America does have a role as leader in the world.

As usual, the right is against equal rights and the left is in favor of them.

BUT, I still haven't seen any evidence that the US is trying to force or change Russia's human rights abuses.

In case you haven't noticed, the US has changed its policies on gays.

That is not an answer to the question.

exactly, we whine and wail about gays in Russia, but say nothing about the executions of gays in Iran and other muslim countries.

What gives our government the right to tell Alabama it can't segregate its schools anymore?

Are you aware that Alabama is a state and Russia is a soverign nation?
