When is profiling wrong?

Medical doctors profile patients using race to determine medical test and treatments because some medical problems are more prevalent among one race than another. Is this wrong?

Auto insurance companies profile people by age and gender to determine insurance auto insurance rates. Everything else being equal, a male 17 year old will have to pay a higher rate than 17 year old female for the same car. The reason they do this is because statistics of the past show that teenage boys are more likely to be the drivers in an accident than teenage girls.

In baseball, statistics are gold. In a clinch situation a the manager of a team may bring in a left handed pitcher because the next batter’s statistics reveal that his batting average is lower against left handed pitchers. Is this profiling, or just using statistics wisely?

In America there is a huge problem with black crime. The statistics are already in many other posts; but needless to say, the violent crime rate for backs is disproportionally higher than the crime rate for other races in America. Black gangs highly contribute to violent crimes. Black gangs are not just in the inner cities, they are present all across the country. Should a white person be nervous because of a group of black teens dressed as gang members that are using gang hand gestures? Should a black person be nervous because of a group of white men on motorcycles that look like Hell’s Angels?

Many teenage males are very cautious drivers and unlikely to have an accident. Should they be angry at the insurance companies for profiling them, or should they be angry at the disproportionally number of male teenage drivers that race and do other nutty things behind the wheel?

When good law abiding black teenagers is unjustly racially profiled, where should most of the anger be directed: at the person doing the profiling, or at the disproportionally number of blacks that are in the gangs and doing the crimes?

That depends on who is dong the ‘profiling.’

And ‘profiling’ is likely not inherently ‘wrong,’ depending on its outcome.

Private citizens are at liberty to profile however they see fit, provided they understand they could be subject to criminal prosecution should they act on their hate and ignorance in a violent manner.

In the public sector, however, governments and their agencies can be exposed to a possible civil or even criminal civil rights violation lawsuit or charge. The classic example of this would be a law enforcement agency that profiles and targets a particular class of persons for arrest and detention, such as African-American men perceived to be ‘criminals’ and Hispanics presumed to be ‘illegal.’

Say you run a store. Its 85 degrees outside the store, yet someone comes in wearing a baggy jacket. Should you keep an eye on this person because you think he/she is likely to shop lift?
