There are only two possibilities here IMO. In both cases, the grown man is culpable, but in both cases it's not quite how the article spun it.

1. If the grown man punched a sixth grader entirely unprovoked than he's either on drugs, mentally ill, or both. Still not an excuse, still deserves jail.

2. If the grown man is not mentally ill or on drugs, the kid provoked him. Still not an excuse, still deserves jail.

But for a sane, sober, grown man to punch a kid unprovoked? No.

The adult is the person who is responsible because well they are the adult. If there is any mental defect in the man then it moves to why he wasn’t better supervised if he was known to be violent? The adults dropped the ball and should be held accountable

Well, I’m not assuming anything. I’m taking this at face value. We don’t know what or IF the kids said anything, we don’t know if the man is mentally ill, we just know a grown man punched a child. That’s as much as I know, and based on that, a grown man should know better.
