The point of the left was established with the French Revolution, the American Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution.

Which is that the wealthy elite are powerful and would abuse individual rights if they can get away with it.
That is not just corrupt government, but also through abusive economic manipulations, since the industrial revolution ended the individual autonomy that cottage industries used to supply.
