Why does Del Toro bump fire pistol in new movie "Soldado" it looks really stupid...

The follow up movie to Sicario is Soldado...about the Mexican drug wars....the first movie was serious and depressing, and now the follow up movie has a trailer. In the Trailer, the "Soldado," Benicio Del Toro, bump fires a pistol....why on earth would he do that?
