Ali believed he was about to become the leader of the Islamic community. Muhammad had named him his successor before his death. But while Ali and Fatimah were busy attending to Muhammad's burial, Abu Bakr and Umar are holding meetings in secret, attempting to gain shura, or consensus, that Abu Bakr should become the next leader instead.

In the dark of the night, armed men pound on the door of Fatimah's house. They demanded that Ali accept the decision of the ummah, or the Islamic community, that Abu Bakr become the caliph, the Islamic leader, instead of Ali. According to the Shia, Ali, Fatimah, and their followers refused. But Abu Bakr, Umar, and their men were more powerful, and they said that they were going to burn the house down around them if they didn't comply. Shia sources say Fatimah was killed as a result of injuries sustained when the armed men broke into the home and a fire started. In the end, though, Ali survived and bided his time.

Abu Bakr became the Caliph that most people agree on. He was then succeeded by Umar upon his death, with Uthman after him. According to the Muslims who believed these men to be the legitimate caliphs, Ali then became the fourth Caliph to lead after Muhammad died. These people would become the Sunni sect.
