Why is Christianity more pronounced in the U.S. than the rest of Western society?

Christianity appeared and the Middle East and spread in Europe profoundly.
Taking into consideration the severe years of inquisition I may suppose that Europe should be far more "Christian" than the USA...
Americans tend to follow the traditions and the belief of Christianity a lot more than the rest of Western civilization. How can this be?

Probably because the evil europeons were smart enough to deport all the religious fanatics to the colonies.

Of course, if we had known then what we know now, the founding fathers would have never made it to the other side of the Atlantic.

It's human nature to grope for solutions.
The U.S. "Bible Belt" includes some impoverished areas, regions where people need help to get by (or not).
And when the natural does not provide, it's human nature to turn to the supernatural.

Western Europe is more socialized.
And in such cultures where medical care is more available, and the gap between rich and poor is narrower,
desperation seems to be rarer.
