What I don't find is some constitutional requirement for it, or a constitutional ban on States choosing to define marriage between one man and one woman.

You seem to be confused on what the Constitution does. It is designed as a limitation of powers, preventing the federal government from overreaching its authority.

As such there would be no constitutional requirement for any sort of marriage, gay or straight. Likewise, there's no constitutional requirement for driver's licenses, motorcycle helmets, or even INSURANCE.

There's more laws in this country than the Constitution. A more appropriate question would be, "Are laws which prohibit gay marriage Constitutional?", as the Constitution is administrative law, not judicial law.

The constitution is silent with regards to regulation of marriage contracts. It therefore falls to the State legislatures to figure it out. And I am not confused about it at all. There is no mention of it in the constitution, the only basis is some judges interpretation of certain amendments, and said judge's personal agenda.
