World Economic Forum Says It Is 'Time to Look Beyond' Private Vehicle Ownership

They're not going to work for plumbers or roofers or cable installers it's true.
But for about 95% or so of the population, they're fine.
95% of the populaion that live in cities that have them and have no want tor need to go somewhere else, sure.
Automobiles give you the freedom to go where you want when you want - streetcars do not.

Forced marriage; people in L.A. LOVED their streetcars until corporations destroyed mass transit in that once great, now shithole, city.

Nobody destroyed anything. People simple prefer better which is a personal automobile. Mass transit can't survive without taxpayer subsides. Very few want to wait for buses, street cars, Ubers or taxi's.

According to the paper, “The average car or van in England is driven just 4% of the time.”

Could make sense to belong to a car sharing program
England is roughly the size of Alabama and it takes about 7 hours to drive from the South to the Northern part of the state

Ride/vehicle sharing could work well in less densely populated areas.

Well, as corporations are legally people, somebody/s absolutely did.

Many regard the GM et al destruction of L.A.'s mass transit system as the crime of the last century in the United States.
People simple prefer better which is a personal automobile.
See above; millions prefer mass transit, but were forced into cars in places like L.A. with disastrous results.

See above, and thank GM et al for their trillion dollar crimes against The People.

Or get involved with a pack of strangers, many of them dangerous and thieving.
I'm not aware of any evidence which indicates that one is in greater danger using mass transit than other forms of travel.

Quite the contrary, the death and inhury rates arising from automobile use are greater by vast multiples.

Is mass transit getting as much taxpayer subsidies as air travel and personal vehicles? The tax we pay ay the gasoline pump doesn`t come close to maintaining our roads and bridges.

Much of that money is put into the general fund. Labor is much more expensive in road and bridge construction, and we do not get the bang for the buck like over a half a century ago and before that.

Everything is more expensive than it was 50 years ago including the materials and equipment.

Outside of electric cars nobody is getting tax subsidies for vehicles. Subsidies are provided to products nobody really wants like mass transit. The government didn't have to give subsidies for cell phones, cable television or big screens. Everybody wanted them as soon as they could afford these things.

Here our consumption tax funds the buses. Without the tax the bus company couldn't stay open because the only people that use buses are those who don't have a license, lost their license, or can't afford a reliable car. There may be a few outliers who have a license and vehicle, but hate driving.

Without subsidies where could we drive our cars other than toll roads? The tax paid at the pump doesn`t even come close to funding our highways.

You don't live in a rural area, do you ?
Ride sharing only works when there are a number of people with similar chanedules and transportation requirements.
Fewer people = less correlation between those schedules and requirements.
Rather than waiting to meet up with someone else, most people will choose to go by themselves, when its convenient for them.

Automobiles are freedom.

Do you understand what a subsidy is? The taxes we pay at the pump, to the state, to the feds create and maintain our roads. Those are taxes, not subsidies. Subsidies are when tax dollars are used to lower the price of something in the private market to get people to buy a product or use a service. You get huge subsidies for solar panels, windmills, electric cars and so on. Without the subsidies they wouldn't be an investment. It would cost you more money than doing things the normal way. With the subsides you may break even if you're lucky, and perhaps feel satisfied that you think you're doing your part to save the planet.

Highway funding other than fuel tax isn't a subsidy, because it does nothing to reduce the cost of a commercial product.

Irrelevant inquiry.

This presumes many things which may not pertain.

Automobiles are the Scam of the 20th Century.
