You May Not Have Electricity This Winter

Yes, fear mongering is all they have in the face of augmenting exiting power plants that run on coal or oil-fired steam with sun-fired steam. Even in Winter. Every sunny day is a day stockholders don't shell out money for fuel to reap increased profits...

Don't be a steam bigot. Don't be a solarthermalaphobe...lol..
Right, sun fired steam, you mean solar power, propagandists come up with a new name for old failed technologies.

No, solar thermal isn't even in the same league as solar PV panels. One creates steam from the sun. The other creates a relatively weak electric current from the sun. One is the same workhorse that coal, oil and nuclear plants use. The other a completely different technology more suited for localized and dispersed power generations.

Don't hate on solar thermal steam like suddenly the principles of physics are suspended if the steam comes from concentrated sunlight year round when it's shining.. Steam is steam bro. And every minute you produce it from the sun is a minute you don't have to spend buying, mining, refining, transporting and burning fossil fuels.

That is where you are wrong, bro. In the electrical power industry there is such a thing as super heated steam, there are moisture seperators, actually, a lot of little details you seem to nothing of, solar is a weak source for creating, steam. Hell, ivanpah is a complete failure, so feel free to engage if you have something a bit more

So you are suggesting that all electricity gained from steam should be shut off? Have you told the coal, oil and nuclear industries about this? They'll be very disapponted to learn that their way of life is being shut down. Steam runs this country. Don't hate on solar thermal steam.

Nope. Just that steam punk hobbyists be required to be registered, licensed and thoroughly educated before you set about blowing things apart and roasting our birdie-friends in flight.

Leave steam to experts, sonny, your fingers may well depend upon it.

The solar thermal system heats the fluid oil to 300c. Have you seen what 330c does to water in heat exchangers? Yeah, superheated steam is what runs the turbines and solar thermal cuts the muster...

You can try the parabolic experiment with a car headlight reflector. Just remove it from behind the glass cover, take out the bulb from the clamp and insert a dry piece of wood there. Face it at the sun any time of year but DO NOT look at the reflective surface without a welding helmet or equivalent eye protection. Wait just a few seconds and the wood will begin to burn.

Then focus the beam on a passing bird and share Silly's instant hot lunch.

Well obviously the reflectors aimed at the solar thermal oil tube a few feet above them are much much larger than a car light reflector. 300 degrees celsius. That'll flash out some superheated steam all right...

The point is that folks at home can grab a handy object nearby and without any heavy modifications can see how the solar thermal steam generation works.

But (yet again, for the thirtieth time) it only works when the sun is out! It is useless for (on average) 12 hours a day, it is useless on an overcast day, it is useless in rain, snow, or fog!

So when the sun is out for most of the year in most places where people live, you get free superheated steam for your turbines. During that time you don't burn fossil fuels. What part of increasing your profit margin don't you get? Did you fail arithmetic in elementary school?

And on sunny days, of which are in the majority on any given year, your brand of electric company should not augment its steam power from free fuel?

Remind me not to invest with you Jar Jar..

No, lie! NOWHERE ON THE PLANET is the sun out "most of the year", not one square inch!

...you get free superheated steam for your turbines. During that time you don't burn fossil fuels.

No, lie! Even when not generating electricity, power plants MUST be kept running (thus, burning fuel) to keep steam up. They take hours to build steam (from totally-cold, they can take a full day).

What part of increasing your profit margin don't you get? Did you fail arithmetic in elementary school?

No...but you did!

Solar thermal steam generation of electricity is far more efficient than photovoltaic generation, but still has a long way to go before it is ready for prime time. Some successful experiments with light absorbing nano technology may be the answer we have been looking for.

No steam generating system is an on/off type technology. It takes time to fire it up, and it takes time to cool it down. Metal does not appreciate rapid changes in temperature. Consequently one needs a cogeneration system such as natural gas or bio-fuel, to keep the steam going when the sun is not shining.

That's what I've been saying all along.

Solar thermal steam is steam. Just like coal-fired steam. They are the same. They are indistinguishable in their power to drive the turbines that are running this country as we speak.

Funny I've never heard of a photovoltaic panel exploding - or even shooting down a single bird in flight. OTOH, steam punk electric has a sort of history.......in the hands of amateurs and other silly fools.

There's a place for photovoltaics. It's just not providing the bulk of this nation's power needs. You are a steam bigot Henry...
