They don’t need to. The center point here is SIZE. There is a problem when an entity the size and wealth of the government moves in on a product. They can price all competition out of the market (because they force you to pay for the product for free), have a control of the law so they can create barriers for other services (also done by the government by accident) and they also have a tendency to flood the market.

There are a lot of advantages to having an annual budget in the trillions, not having to worry about profits or losses and being able to force your ‘audience’ to pay through tax and law.
